This circular walk takes us around the area where the last battle of the Republican Airforce was fought. The airfield was based just outside the town of Garriguella, Alt Emporda. The route is approx. 8 km. on fairly flat land. No hills to climb. It now takes us through vineyards and olive groves following the outline of the original airfield where bunkers and the hospital for airmen and locals could shelter and be treated can still be seen. On 6th February 1939 the Condor squadron attacked the airfield destroying all but 4 of the 30 planes based at the airfield. One of the Condor planes was shot down and the pilots grave is still marked. One of our Catalan members knows the history very well and will be there to tell us more about this day and the area. Although the walk is fairly flat it is recommended that good walking shoes are worn and a sun hat as there will be little shade.
