Every year in May, Céret, a charming Catalan town (in France) celebrates their Cherry Festival where agricultural traditions rub shoulders with the explosive joy of brass bands  in their own festival - the ‘Céret de Bandas’.

This year the festival (23 & 24 May) is a vibrant Catalan celebration featuring cherry-themed markets, musical bands, and street musicians, traditions like the cherry pit-spitting contest and local tastings of cherry wine, beer and pastries. When people talk about Céret, cherries inevitably come up! It’s the first town in France to harvest cherries each year, usually by mid-May. This early ripening has become a source of local pride. Every year, the first fruits are sent to the Élysée Palace, a tradition dating back to the 1930s.

How many cherry varieties have you tasted?
These are the main varieties grown in Céret :

· Burlat – heart-shaped. Moderately firm, juicy, sweet.
· Canada Giant – sweet, firm, and crunchy
· Napoleon – sweet, juicy, with a marbled pinkish-red skin
· La Bellise – dark-skinned and firm
Plus Folfer, Ferdouce, Marmotte and Moreau varieties

Barbara Vernau is offering Local Interest Group the opportunity to spend the day (Saturday 23 May) visiting Céret to enjoy the festival.
