Directions to meeting place
We will meet at Bar/cafeteria El Centre, c/del Pont, Santa Paul 17811 Santa Pau (alt. 496m) is in the Garrotxa, on the GI 524, about 25 minutes west of Banyoles. Take the C66 from La Bisbal and follow signs to Banyoles. It's best to use a GPS to help you find the way through Banyoles to the GI 524 but the easiest is probably to exit the C66 at Mata/Banyoles Sud, 3rd exit at roundabout onto C 150a. Then Carrer de Mata, Passeig del Mosen Lluis Constans, GIV 5248 and left onto GI 524. Arriving in Santa Pau, go past the traffic light and very shortly afterwards you will find the Tourist Office on the right. Park behind it. Walk back past the lights, turn right into C/Major, keep bearing right and follow past Ayuntament, then bear left down C/del Pont, over the bridge and continue round to the left on C/del Pont. The bar El Centre is just after the bend on the left.
Route Description
This is a beautiful trail which takes us from the mediaeval village up to the Sanctuary of Santa Maria de Finestres (altitude 880 m) through some beech woods. There is a variety of scenery, culminating in fantastic views of the Garrotxa. Steady gradual uphill, with some flat sections, for the first hour on good forest tracks, then a short but challenging very steep section for about 30 minutes on rough rocky terrain along a gully through jungly vegetation. Climbing on, still quite steeply, we reach the sanctuary where we will have our picnic break. All downhill on the return, still on rocky paths to start with, then easing to wider tracks opening out onto fields nearing the village, and passing another sanctuary, Els Arcs.
