After a member has been with the group for one year, they will be expected
to offer to organise a minimum of
one game over a
two year period. In this way the group remains vibrant and active without any one person being unduly overburdened.
Arranging a Game
We play on the 3
rd Wednesday of each month (10 am – April through October; 10:30 am – November through March), unless the organiser has a particular reason to choose a different day / time (senior discount, tournament, etc). Three weeks before the event the Group Coordinator will send the Organiser a form to be filled in with the event details (location, tee-time, lunch arrangements) and returned to the Coordinator for posting on the website at least two weeks prior to the event. A provisional booking is made with the course and the restaurant. Once the cut-off date for sign-ups is passed, the Organiser confirms with the course the tee slots and restaurant.
Signing Up for a Game
Places are always limited. On some courses, there are a limited number of consecutive tee-slots available to us. A message is sent to all members of the group as soon as an event is available for sign up. To ensure a place at an event, you should sign up promptly on the website. If the event is full, please join the waiting list and you will be told if space becomes available. If you find later on that you are unable to attend, make sure you tell the organiser well in advance to allow a member on the waiting list to take your place.
Members who have organised a game in the last twenty-four months or are scheduled to organise a game in the coming year are given priority over those who have not. If you are a member who has not organised, or is not planning to organise a game, you should sign up; but if the event become oversubscribed you will be asked to stand aside to make a place available for another member.
If you were on the waiting list and failed to get included in the game, you will be given special consideration the following month to try to get you playing, so it is always worth signing up on the waiting list when the event is full.

Scoring
Players of all levels are welcome and games are friendly rather than competitive. However, we normally organise fun scoring systems aimed at making all players possible winners.
We generally use the following scoring systems but any system of the Organiser’s choosing can be used.
System Name |
How to use |
Match Play |
All players in the team (2 persons) play each hole as a separate contest against each other. The person with the lowest score wins the hole, regardless of the number of stokes played. If the number of stokes is equal, the hole is “halved”. The person winning the most holes wins. Not suitable for players of greatly different abilities. |
Stroke Play |
All players in the team (2 or 4 persons) play each hole and record the total number of strokes played. The person with the lowest score (adjusted for handicap if known) wins. |
Stableford |
A system where points are awarded to players based on the difficulty of each hole. It is best calculated using a simple spreadsheet where scores are entered against the hole handicap. The group coordinator can supply. |
Texas Scramble |
Players form two-person teams. Both members of the pair tee-off. Select the best shot. Both players take a shot from that position. This continues until the first ball is holed. There is a single score that applies to the pair which is the number of stokes taken by the 1st player to hole out. Teams can also be made of 3 or 4 players. Group teams with a mixture of abilities. |
Putt Count |
Once the player is on the green, count the number of putts required to hole-out. The winner is the player with the fewest accumulated putts. This scoring system is normally used in parallel but separate to another scoring system during the same game, creating a small competition within a broader competition. Should be used in combination with another system such as Five Max or Stroke Play. |
Five Max |
On each hole, once the player has a score of 5, they pick up the ball and walk it to the green, placing it at the first point on the edge that they come to. They continue the game (and the scoring) from there. This prevents a high-scoring player from becoming too far behind and keeps the game moving if time is pressing. |
Foursomes |
Players form two-person teams. They use only one ball. Player A always tees-off from odd-numbered holes, player B from even-numbered holes. They play each shot alternately. Penalty shots do not affect the order of play. Group teams with a mixture of abilities. |
Greensomes |
Players form two-person teams. They select the best tee-shot and play from that position. Using a single ball between them, the player whose ball was not selected plays the next shot and all future even-number shots on this hole, the other team member playing all the odd-numbered shots. *** Also Gruesomes – same as Greensomes but the opponents choose which ball is used. *** Group teams with a mixture of abilities. |
Chapman |
Players form two-person teams. Both members of the pair tee-off. Player A then plays Player B’s ball and Player B plays Player’s A ball. From then on, the team selects the best ball to play. Both players take a shot from that position. This continues until the first ball is holed. There is a single score that applies to the pair which is the number of stokes taken by the 1st player to hole out. Teams can also be made of 3 or 4 players. Group teams with a mixture of abilities. |
Lagging |
After everyone gets on the green and regardless of the number of strokes, the player closest to the hole gets 3 points, the next player closest to the hole gets 2 points, the next player closest to the hole gets 1 point and the player farthest from the hole gets 0 points. Total the points for all eighteen holes to decide the winner. |
For-Play |
All strokes are counted, like stroke play. Players are grouped into teams (4, 3 or 2 players). On each hole, the team also records the score of the best player. However, each member of the team’s score must be used at least 4 times if the team consists of 4 players (5 times if the team is 3 players; 6 times if the team is 2 players). The player whose score is to be used on each hole is chosen after the 1st tee-shot is taken. The winning team is the one with the lowest score. Group teams with a mixture of abilities. [There are variations on which player’s score is to be used. The selected player can be chosen after all have putted-out or before the 1st tee shot is taken.] |
Other Fun Things To Do
Here are some ideas to inject fun into the game.
Idea |
How to use |
Who Buys The Beer |
If you are 4 players, select 3 random numbers between 1 and 18 (if you are 3 players, choose 2 numbers, etc). Whoever “wins” the first numbered hole you come to is eliminated from the shortlist. Whoever “wins” the second numbered hole you come to is also eliminated from the shortlist. Carry on until there is one person not eliminated – they buy the beers! |
Three Club |
Each player is limited to just 3 clubs of their choosing. |
Red Ball |
Draw a line across the score card from top left to bottom right. Where the line crosses your name line, you get to halve your actual score. |
Closest to the Pin |
The 1st team to tee-off carries a pin. At the shortest hole on the course, they place it where the tee-shot closest to the pin falls and mark the attached card with the name of the player. If any subsequent player does better, the pin is moved to the closer position and the name of the player added. The last team through retrieves the pin and card. [Pins are supplied by the club]. |
Longest Drive |
The 1st team to tee-off carries a pin. At the longest hole on the course, they place it where the tee-shot furthest from the tee falls and mark the attached card with the name of the player. If any subsequent player does better, the pin is moved to the further position and the name of the player added. The last team through retrieves the pin and card. [Pins are supplied by the club]. |
String |
Each player is issued with a length of string depending on the assumed skill of the player. At any point in the game, the player can cut a length off their string and move the ball without penalty to a new position determined by the cut length. The cut length is then discarded. |
